I always enjoy learning about other artists and their creative process, and I hope that in posting these, I can help others too!⁠⁠ .⁠⁠ .⁠⁠ Today, I’ll be showing you my first steps when creating a floral illustration and what size MICRON pens I use when I begin. During the growing season, I typically work from photos I’ve taken myself. Well, it’s pretty cold right now and there are no flowers… so I’ve found some reference photos online! I’ll be drawing three spring-blooming Illinois natives, some of the first to pop from the ground: False Rue Anemone, Rue Anemone, and Sharp-Lobed Hepatica.⁠⁠ .⁠⁠ .⁠⁠ First, I like to give myself some place holders in pencil, typically just some ovals and lines to represent the flower heads and stems. This helps me visualize how to fill the space and to make sure I’ll have a balanced drawing.⁠⁠ .⁠⁠ Next, I reference my photos as I fill in the details with a pencil. I like to start with the center of the flower and work my way around.⁠⁠ .⁠⁠ Now for the fun part… the MICRON pens! I use my 005 to outline the details in the center of the flower. The 005 is perfect because it allows me to get those teeny tiny details while still maintaining a crisp black line.⁠⁠ .⁠⁠ Then, I outline around each petal and fill in main directional lines within the petals with my MICRON 01. I like how I can achieve a solid outline for my drawing without having it end up too heavy or thick.⁠⁠ .⁠⁠ .⁠⁠ That’s it for today!
