Nara Kim & Yoorim Do

What is family to you?
“Yoorim and I knew each other since we both went to Ewha Womans University and starting talking through Instagram. Regardless of how the relationship is formed, I think family is about living together in one place and relying on each other. If we are talking about it in basic terms, we can say we split the housework. But in a larger sense, we are doing things we want to do for ourselves and for each other, and it’s perfect right now. As we live together, we are conscientious of each other and naturally have a responsibility to support each other and become closer. Yoorim once said it’s like our wrists are tied together with red rope, so we’ll do tug of war sometimes but also jump rope together.

Do you think the definition of family is changing in Korea?
“We are a family that is not yet accepted by Korean society, and I feel that the conservative idea of a family rooted in blood ties or patriarchy is still prevalent. There has been a lot of focus on single-person households due to the recent decrease in population. But we hope that when different types of families and individuals are revealed and recognized, we will see a change. Gen Z has a lot of influence, but things will only be recognized once there's legal regulation or protection. Non-traditional families have always been there, but now they’re more visible. We are also in the transition period of that change.”
