Whaling ships harbored here, and captains serving the Hudson’s Bay Company sailed to Canada—and brought back wives from the North American tribes. On the way out they passed the Hoy in the background there, never certain they would see it again. Their houses line the narrow street that meanders along the shore like rope on a deck, with a skiff just out the back door to get to their ships.
