Does meaningful exploration require you to go far from home or to somewhere exotic or beautiful? Just the opposite I think. Although much of my training & work photographing takes me to places I can only dream of, I feel that experiences I learn most from are close to home and often in, well, less than desirable locations. A few weekends ago I took the day to travel through the Santa Maria Rivermouth. A 50 mile fatbike trip from through a deep sand & boulder laden riverbed that is the major run-off for a massive agriculture area. By most standards not a safe, beautiful or desirable to spend the day exploring. But this location is vital to our area and In many ways being ignorant to it’s importance by always avoiding it seems to only increase my lack of appreciation. Getting off the beaten path doesn’t mean you will always like what you see, but it doesn’t make it any less worth seeing & understanding.
Some highlights included riding through feces, seeing a team of wild boar, crossing the sand dunes to the coast, seeing the full moon rise on the beach.. and seeing an unidentified large animal slowly walk into the bush 😅
