Photos by @jonathankingston / Can you imagine living your whole life in quarantine? That is what countless people suffering from Hansen’s disease (commonly known as leprosy) were forced to do before the advent of sulfone drugs. Before this cure, the Kalaupapa Peninsula on the Hawaiian island of Molokai was an isolated quarantine zone for those suffering from Hansen’s. The story of its beginnings is heartbreaking, but more amazing is the incredible community, which exists to this day, formed in the crucible of isolation.

In 2013 I was invited to stay on the Kalaupapa Peninsula for a couple of nights, and the visit lit my curiosity on fire. The roller-coaster of emotions I have experienced since the COVID-19 pandemic began has only deepened my admiration for the patients of the peninsula, a handful of whom remain living on Kalaupapa to this day.

Visitors were allowed on one side, patients on the other. The width of the table inside is as close as patients could get to non-patients.
