The relevance? It’s another of his beautiful shots adorning the cover and he directed the timeless video made to accompany the release of the single.   Though taken from 1971’s Hunky Dory, Life On Mars? reached #3 on the UK singles chart when it was finally issued as a single in the UK, on 22nd June, 1973. Possibly capitalising on its popularity with David’s live audience, the single’s success may also have been partly due to the picture sleeve (unusual in the UK back then), which featured another incredible Mick Rock cover.   As was normal, the sheet music would have been published soon after the single was released, and it was also a big seller.  The 8th June 1972 edition of Rolling Stone featured a full-page piece by Mick titled “David Bowie Is Just Not Serious”. While talking about Hunky Dory, David expressed his feelings about what he thought should have been released as the first single from Hunky Dory...  “I love the arrangement on ‘Mars’. I would rather have put that out as a single than ‘Changes’. But I decided to leave it up to RCA.”   The interview was conducted before the release of Starman and after BBC Radio 1’s single of the week in the first week of January 1972, Changes, had already flopped. Hindsight, has been described as beautiful, and in this instance it certainly is.
