On Christmas night we were fortunate to get some physically distanced outside time with a friend who has a telescope. Even with all the light pollution in LA we were able to make out the moons of Jupiter and the oblong shape of saturn’s rings. Our own moon was especially amazing - pitted and pockmarked and oh so three dimensional.

It struck me that this relatively simple technology (the telescope) was allowing me to see in a way I’d never seen before - in a way humankind prior to the last few centuries had never seen. And that new sight can change so much about how we perceive ourselves and our world and the place of both in the universe and the awe of all that bundled together. Im thankful for these opportunities for new sight (new empathy, new wonder) and hope the year that begins with Christmas will bring more.
