Many of you know my journey of beginning to write @hoseafilm and learning - through researching for that script - about the degree to which exploited and coerced workers were making the clothes I was buying. 7 years ago I made a commitment to only purchase #secondhand clothing in an effort to curb the proliferation of those brands, and I started @revived.us because I became so interested in more ethical fashion and #circulardesign. One of the pillars of @dressember’s mission is to educate (in addition to prevention, intervention, and advocacy). I am incredibly fortunate to live in the US - and one of the outcomes of living here is that I am not exposed to the ramifications of industries consumers like me utilize (the fields where my food is grown, the laborers who make my products, and the landfills where I send my trash). I believe it’s increasingly important for us to educate ourselves (and each other) about the world around us, which we might not see everyday; about how our decisions affect others. That’s one of the (many) reasons I decided to participate in Dressember this year by wearing a tie everyday.
