Jorge Luis Borges’s short stories “contain the DNA not only of his heart, and mind, and world view, but of the way Argentina and Latin America see the world,” the essayist and translator Ilan Stavans says. It would be impossible to choose the “best” story by Borges, or even the most influential, he says, but “I'm going to suggest one short story that I am hoping will be an anchor, a map, certainly an invitation for you to enter that galaxy of creations that Borges offered us. It is called ‘The Aleph.’ ”
