In October, chef Duwaine Harris opened Stella’s, a Caribbean restaurant on Brooklyn’s Fifth Avenue, despite thousands of businesses around the U.S. having closed as the coronavirus pandemic swept the country. ⁠⠀

A good deal from his landlord, kitchen equipment left behind by the previous tenant and money cobbled together from family members, credit cards, Harris and his wife’s savings, and a loan from a Covid-19 relief program put Stella’s in business.⁠⠀

For eight months, the Journal has chronicled Fifth Avenue, a commercial strip with a mix of 500 restaurants, beauty shops, yoga studios and other businesses. Many are struggling and 32 have shut down during that period, according to the Park Slope Fifth Avenue Business Improvement District, but 37 have opened or are preparing to open. ⁠⠀

Rent deals with landlords and creative ways to bring in revenue have helped, said Mark Caserta, head of the Business Improvement District. “They’re always finding a way to stay open,” he said.⁠⠀
