If you’ve only started following me recently you might not know my Internet origin story, and why should you. Over 10 years of blogging has been a real ride. Who remembers the days of logging on to individual blogs to see your favourite style star’s latest post? Now Instagram shows you everything - well no where near but it has taken over a huge cultural space. Perhaps the most surprising fact about my career is that before I began my own blog I never really read anyone else’s. I was just so excited to share my inspirations, with like-minded people, and I had no reference point for what a blog should be. I felt totally free. I sometimes feel that that’s compromised on Instagram, because it’s almost impossible to tune out everything else, and just like everyone else, I feel influenced by the things that I see on this platform. I tend to notice it when a new product is launched that has a big push online, it makes me aware that I’m interested in something only because I’ve seen it so many times - it’s very effective. And of course I’m guilty of this too. It can be challenging to stay true to my voice and aesthetic while also making this platform pay (after all it is my job). How can you be inspired but stay original at the same time? Stay in tune with trends and movements but not be lead by them unconsciously?
