The storm, which is wider than the Atlantic Ocean (that’s approximately 4,600 miles across), was first discovered in the planet’s northern hemisphere by Hubble in 2018. To the surprise of astronomers, Hubble spotted the vortex change direction in August 2020, doubling back to the north. Though Hubble has tracked similar dark spots over the past 30 years, this unpredictable atmospheric behavior is something new to see!  Astronomers are excited about the findings because it is potentially part of the dark spot’s disruption process, which has never been observed.
