On this day in 1972, Eugene A. Cernan, Commander of Apollo 17, saluted the flag on the Moon during the final lunar lander mission. The Lunar Module “Challenger” is in the left background behind the flag, along with the Lunar Roving Vehicle. While the flag appears to “wave,” it’s actually swinging.
Fun fact: Swinging motions on Earth are dampened due to gravity and air resistance, but on the Moon any swinging motion can continue for much longer.
