Repost from @wearyourvoice

This week Lizzo was the subject of largely anti-Fat online discourse surrounding her recent social media posts related to her *personal* feelings about her body and her decision to do a 10-day smoothie detox following a extended amount of time in which she consumed large amounts of alcohol and spicy foods.

WYV managing editor @dashaunlh penned this thread that really speaks to the ways in which the public + the fat community engages Lizzo, a celebrity, who has *never* articulated that she has a fat liberationist politic, publicly violently, based on the expectation that the way she moves + what she does with her body must be political.

In the thread, Da’Shaun (they/them) explicitly distinguishes the difference between “body positivity” “fat liberation” and “body neutrality.”

They also reference how the people’s projecting their desire for representation as it relates fat liberation politics onto Lizzo is harmful and results in her mammification.

In all, diet culture and anti-Fatness should absolutely be critiqued, but attempting to drag, or feel “failed by” Lizzo and any other celebrity who doesn’t perfectly embody a fat liberationist politic that we push onto them is unfair and is something folks must stop doing.
