Is gift giving about things, or about a story? Can we find gifts that are made sustainably? Consciously? Let’s forget about quantity and focus on quality. Maybe this year we buy less, but buy better, or better yet, don’t buy at all. Gifts also some in the form of time. Volunteering, that’s a gift. Writing a beautiful letter, that’s a gift. If there is extra money to spend, we can focus on donating to organizations that speak to our hearts, and if you do have the ability to spend a little something on yourself or a loved one, research where and how it was made, the hands that made it, and the materials used. One of the reasons I choose to work with gold instead of brass is because gold isn’t disposable. Its an heirloom, a treasure. That might mean a once in a lifetime purchase, with the promise that it’ll stay with you for a lifetime and never make its way into a trash can or landfill.
