Rosa died a year ago today.
When Rosa died something in me came alive.

I use to think Rosa and I couldn’t have been more different. It wasn’t until later in life that I realized how deeply alike we are.

Rosa wanted to be an actress, that’s what she told me once when we were watching an old black and white movie.
She said “I wish I could have been a diva of the cinema”, she used old vocabulary like that, which I just adored.
I asked “why didn’t you?” and her answer broke my heart.
She said “I wasn’t allowed by the men in my life.”
I grabbed her hand looked at her in the eye and said “I’ll do it for us grandma.”

Rosa was a woman of her times.
She didn’t speak up much. She didn’t fight or scream. Always put together. Ever so kind. Generous like few. She lived for others. Joy and laughter were her tools for letting go. Forgiveness was something she had to do a lot of.

I’ve walked a very different path from hers.
I left home young. I love who I want. I became an actress. I speak up, sometimes too much. I screamed and I allowed life to harden me. I lost the Rosa within me.

The last message I received from her said... ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE LOVED. You don’t have to always be strong. Forgive. Soften. Let go.

And so, here we are a year later, my heart cracked open but from it grows a rose.

Rosa, a woman who didn’t enjoy the freedoms I have, healed the woman, the feminine force within me and for that she will always be my greatest teacher.

Te amo abuela. Gracias.
