Photos by @MichaelGeorge / The Mohonk Preserve covers an astonishing 8,000 acres of land near New Paltz, New York. Though I have visited many times, I usually find myself on the same trails: Bonticou Crag (a harrowing but not so difficult rock scramble) or Table Rock (a bizarre and beautiful giant slab of stone). On my last visit I had the opportunity to meet Jon Ross, who has worked with the preserve for decades. He began his relationship as a rock climber visiting the Gunks. He fell so in love with the area that he decided to work there. The preserve has a massive connection of carriage roads that allow staff to travel quickly along the hiking paths.
Ross took me to see Cope’s Lookout (the first image in this series), a particularly striking view of the Shawangunk Ridge that I had never seen before. I captured this image with my drone, flying a ways off the cliff face to place the blooming autumn trees in the foreground. In the next slide, you’ll see a particularly flamboyant tree. I liked how it was showing off every color of fall all at once.
