David Deutchman, who volunteered for 14 years at an Atlanta Children's hospital, died last week after being diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer, his family said. The 86-year-old, known as "The Baby Whisperer" or "ICU Grandpa," would come to the hospital twice a week to comfort and care for sick and premature babies. "He was a very soothing presence to our children. He would always be there to cuddle the child when the parents or family couldn't be there," nurse Joanna Slade said, adding that she never saw a baby crying in his arms.
