Thank you, Grace, for this opportunity to share my work and tell my story. ♥️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 𝐋𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐈𝐄 𝐍𝐄𝐋𝐋 was born out of a deep desire to connect to my Indigenous ancestry and newly discovered family. I can’t tell this story without going way, way back. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I have spent my entire life with a feeling of non-belonging, growing up with two fair-haired brothers that I did not resemble. At the age of 22 while carrying out the “making amends” step of AA, my mom confessed that my biological father “wasn’t white” with no further explanation. This was not a surprise to me but also solidified my sense of otherness within my family. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I spent the next 15 years searching for my dad, including multiple DNA tests and occasional online searches. In June of this year I left my job at a residential design/build firm in pursuit of more meaningful work... a few days later coffee with a friend turned serendipitous when I told him the story of my unknown ancestry. Within minutes he had pulled up a Facebook profile of a man with eyes that bore a striking resemblance to my own.  Scrolling down his timeline I saw a woman I knew without question was my sister. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Since then, I have made connections with several members of my family, including four siblings and several Aunties, all members of the Mowa Band of Choctaw Indians of Alabama.  ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Needing time for quiet meditation to process, I turned to my childhood hobby of beadwork... spending around 12 hours daily re-learning the art and finding it to be a great medicine.  As each bead is stitched with good thoughts and intentions, I have felt a greater connection to myself, my family, and ancestors. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In August of 2020, I launched 𝐋𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐈𝐄 𝐍𝐄𝐋𝐋, named for my late Grandmother and the matriarch of my Alabama family.  My Auntie tells me that Granny is watching me from heaven, saying “Amen! Amen!” But honestly, I can feel Granny with me and 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯 𝘮𝘦 every moment I am beading, guiding my hands, and sharing her wisdom.」11月16日 22時50分 - designsponge
