Photo by @lucalocatelliphoto / The dry desert climate in Arizona helps prevent corrosion and weather damage to aircraft stored at the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group in Tucson. The Boneyard handles nearly 4,400 decommissioned planes, dismantling them and reusing parts or reassembling entire aircraft to be put back into service. AMARG is one of the subjects in my latest story for National Geographic magazine, “The End of Trash.” This massive air base is a way for the military to cut down the need for new parts. Could it be an example for other large-scale industries to be less wasteful?
