“Before 1987, when the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody was established, the number of deaths was not recorded extensively and neither was the genocide that systemically and routinely took place across Australia,” writes Yvonne Weldon, pictured here, a Wiradjuri woman who has volunteered and worked in Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal roles throughout her career. “The estimated number of the mass deaths of Aboriginal people could never be counted in your numbers because our tally never ends. Their names are not recorded, the figures are not listed but the grief continues, because their lives did matter, they still do matter.” In a story first published in the August issue of #Vogue, which we revisit now during #NAIDOC2020, Weldon explains the confronting truth surrounding Aboriginal deaths in custody and argues that instigating real change goes beyond reconciliation and recognition—it’s about addressing overt and covert racism head on.
