Large crowds have been gathering outside the White House since Joe Biden was declared the winner in the presidential race.

Street celebrations broke out across the U.S., with people banging pans and cheering while others drove through the streets honking their horns. New Yorkers whistled and rang cowbells. In Atlanta, they popped champagne corks.

In many ways, the cheering recalled scenes from 2008, when Barack Obama was elected president. But this time, as much as people were celebrating the ascension of Biden and Kamala Harris, they were marking the end of the tumultuous four-year reign of Donald Trump.

In other parts of the country, the response to Biden’s win was not celebratory. Some supporters of President Trump responded with disappointment and disbelief.
