Kamala Harris has made history as the first woman, the first Black person and the first person of Indian descent to be elected vice president.
Harris, 56, has risen higher in the country’s leadership than any woman ever, a feat that underscores the extraordinary arc of her political career. A former San Francisco district attorney, she was elected as the first Black woman to serve as California’s attorney general. When she was elected a United States senator in 2016, she became only the second Black woman in the chamber’s history.
The daughter of a Jamaican father and Indian mother, Harris embodies the future of a country that is growing more racially diverse every year, even if the person voters picked for the top of the ticket is a 77-year-old white man.
