How do you deal with stress? #StressAwarenessWeek 💙

Stress is a natural part of life, many of us live with constant subliminal stressors like noise, light, pollution, over-crowding and the relentless speed of living in an increasingly digital world. Adding instant stressors to the subliminal can feel like a mental tipping point - this could be as seemingly innocuous as an email or phone notification. In fact, long-term stress may leave us feeling like we’re on an emotional roller-coaster; wired, competitive, irritable, unfocused, tired...

A Japanese practice called shinrin-yoku or ‘taking in the forest atmosphere’ was devised in the 1980’s as an eco-therapy for tech burnout and to reconnect people to nature. This year many of us have found nature to be a soothing balm. I find trees give me a sense of peace, walking my dog (a sniffer, not a walker) is a slo-mo wander. I used to get annoyed but now it’s a walking meditation and a key part of my day. Her slow pace gives me time to observe - the light through the trees, looking up at the treetops and the way trees move in the wind. A big part of my amble is smell, now it’s the earthy scent of autumn decay but in spring the fir trees smell deliciously of mandarins. Then of course there are the peaceful sounds of birds all around.

Not all of us have access to a forest but we can take this Japanese concept and make it relevant to us, connecting to a favourite tree, an amble in the park, finding a little bit of ‘wild’ near you, tending houseplants or a window box. However you do it, take the chance to switch off your phone, don’t check emails, slow down and amble so that your mind has a chance to tune in to something we all have an intrinsic connection with – nature.

Tipper 💙
