The relentless waters of the mighty Mississippi River flow by Effigy Mounds National Monument in #Iowa on another autumn day. Unlike the tireless river, visitors can pause and contemplate the history of this fascinating place. For a period of time between 1,400 and 750 years ago, a culture now known as Effigy Moundbuilders constructed more than 200 mounds of earth in the forests and meadows of this area. While some mounds are rectangular or conical, others were formed in the shapes of birds, bear, deer, bison, lynx, turtle, panther and water spirits. Sacred to the monument's 20 culturally associated tribes, the exact purpose and meaning of many of the mounds remain a mystery.
