So George and I were thinking that seven months ago, just after South Africa’s hard lockdown, there were quite a few articles written about the impact lockdown would have on the captive lion industry. You just need to do a quick internet search to verify this. With close to or over 300 lion breeding farms in South Africa (depending on who you talk to), it was predicted that these facilities would neglect the lions in their care due to lack of income from foreigners coming to pet or shoot them. I was fearful that we would soon be hearing and seeing reports of lions suffering left, right and center, as their owners abandoned them due to the high costs of keeping them. But it’s been deathly silent, and the return of foreign tourism is starting to feel like a pipe dream (for the time being). So my question is, what on earth is happening & what of the 12,000 odd lions living in captivity in South Africa?
