I have no doubt that after Boris’ announcement on Saturday everyones heads are spinning- but please try and cast your mind back to these images from the start of the year. Ransacked shelves, chaotic supermarkets and most of all these harrowing pictures of our elderly and vulnerable with empty baskets and crestfallen faces. Our circumstances are frustrating, but this isn’t our first rodeo- sadly we have been here before and we have a better idea of what to expect. We do not need to panic buy and stockpile to such selfish and greedy extents that others go hungry. Burned into my brain are not only these heartbreaking images of the members of our community- that we should be protecting- suffering and struggling but also the disgusting amount of wasted food and groceries that the last round of unnecessary, inconsiderate and self serving stockpiling produced. So before we all rush to the shops today, bulk buying bog roll and filling your trolley with flour (that I’ll bet good money absolutely no one used) take a second and think mindfully, of what you actually need and of others. The elderly and the vulnerable need our help now more than ever and I just hope we’ve learnt from our mistakes, we don’t allow our fear and greed to cloud our judgement. Because we cannot fail them again. I spent 3 months of lockdown begging brands for donations for my isolation care package project- desperately trying to make a small dent in the hunger, stress and disappointment that the older generation were experiencing on top of the fear and uncertainty of the pandemic. Quite frankly, I know I didn’t even touch the sides- I’m not above begging again and restarting this initiative- but I hope we can be kind and considerate enough as a nation to avoid this.
