The presence of water on the sunlit surface of the moon has been confirmed for the first time, according to two studies published Monday in the journal Nature Astronomy. The studies examined data from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and its airborne Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, which analyzed the moon’s molecular water signatures and permanently-shadowed areas where water could remain frozen. Researchers say the water on the surface could be used as a resource for upcoming NASA missions, including as drinking water or as rocket fuel.
