Repost from @ifawglobal • BREAKING: Today the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (@USFWS) finalized a rule removing protections for all gray wolves in the lower-48 states—except for a small population of Mexican wolves in Arizona and New Mexico.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ A keystone species, gray wolves play a critical role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Wolf populations are far from recovered in much of their native territory.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Proposed last year, the rule outraged Americans with approximately 1.8 million comments submitted by the public opposing the delisting. Hundreds of members of Congress, scientists, businesses, and veterinary professionals submitted letters opposing the wolf delisting plan. Despite this outcry, the rule issued today removes all federal protections for gray wolves.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ "Removing federal protections now only threatens already fragile gains," says Danielle Kessler, IFAW U.S. Country Director.
