At least 56 people have died across Nigeria since the #EndSARS protests began on October 8, with 38 killed across the country on Tuesday alone, according to human rights group Amnesty International.

SARS -- Nigeria's Special Anti-Robbery Squad -- is a controversial police unit that has taken the lead in addressing the country's most serious crimes -- armed robbery, kidnapping, assault, and murder. But over time it has become notorious for alleged abuses committed with apparent impunity.

On October 11, the inspector general of police said the SARS unit was being disbanded but protests over police brutality have continued. Bloodshed broke out earlier this week when eyewitnesses told CNN multiple demonstrators had been shot and killed by Army soldiers, who dragged their bodies away.

Following days of silence, President Buhari spoke to the nation on Thursday evening but failed to address the military attack on peaceful protesters, instead told the youth to “discontinue the street protests and constructively engage government in finding solutions.”

This has drawn criticism from protesters who accuse the President of failing to show empathy and unifying the nation.
