Fusing Minimalism with spirituality, the work of Irish abstractionist Sean Scully (@seanscullystudio) is characterised by gestural stripes and blocks of colour. ⠀
⠀
Amid a solo exhibition at @skulpturenparkwaldfrieden (an exhibition space founded by his old pal, artist Tony Cragg), and ahead of a major retrospective in Budapest, Scully spoke to Wallpaper's Harriet Lloyd-Smith (@harriart__) about self-belief, humanising geometry, and art as spiritual combat: ‘In my work, structure and emotion rage simultaneously, and that’s a very incongruous mixture. I am madly physical.'⠀
⠀
Pictured, Scully's 'Stack', an architectural tower of glass in conversation with his paintings at Waldfrieden. 'The interesting thing about glass is it’s a wall you can see through,' he muses. 'In a sense, it’s an object that’s not an object. It operates like a ghost or an angel between realms.'⠀
