For me, there is a tapestry of hope and disaster where motherhood begins, moments where the border of being a woman and being a mother is crossed.” says the artist. Freeland feels it is necessary to use her work to remind us that becoming a mother is one of the biggest changes a woman will ever come to experience in her lifetime. The Photographs in this series act in response to a culturally dispassionate gaze, loaded with the distortion of unrealistic and unrepresentative beauty standards that so brutally discount the heroism of Motherhood. About the artist - Imogen Freeland is a British photographer based in London. Born in 1987. She received a BA in Photography from Falmouth School of Art and an MA in Photography from London College of Communication. Her work has been published and exhibited extensively. Renowned for her portraiture, nudes and social documentary artwork, Imogen’s style is best known for her use of natural and ambient light sources which lend an unusual and painterly depth to her images.
