The project on display is titled “Portrait of Uzbekistan”. “This series of photographs is not a particular project, but my long-term research of my country for which I am travelling for a few years. All these images for me represent a special subject that I called “Portrait of Uzbekistan”. This theme is simple – it is about my country through our people, who in my view most of the time unseen. I am full of questions about my identity as a citizen of Uzbekistan, and as a person living in this world. What represents our country today, and who we are as a nation, what unites us and who am I neither? These are very few questions which I am trying to answer. One of the most inspiring things to me is the diversity of communities living in Uzbekistan, a treasure that I want to remember, capture and share with the world. I believe that travelling, meeting people, photographing them and places are what build my understanding of modern Uzbekistan.” About the artist - Hassan Kurbanbaev is a Uzbekistan based photographer who lives in Tashkent city. He has always been fascinated by creative ideas, but he didn’t immediately come to the conclusion that photography could become his main focus, his job. At some point of his life, Kurbanbaev realized that photography was something more serious than he previously thought, a world in which he feels free.
