The project on display is titled “Where have you been lately?”. "In loving, in togetherness and in emotional dependency, no one informed us that one day we will depart without any certainty of meeting again.” says the artist. “No one informed me that each morning I would look for you and we will be locked in different continents. Too much of our lives are already controlled by borders and differences, nationalities, identities, cultures, upbringing but irrespective of these, we are so similar. We like to pause at the same thrift shops, you don’t like sweets but we meet halfway, we like to have a sliced cucumber in our gin, we wait to hear sounds of the frogs by the lake, we like to talk about decolonization and each night we come crashing into different beds of same feelings. But where have you been lately? Who will caress me through my nightmares now? Why can't I breathe the same air as you? It is always either of the two extremes, too close or countries away from each other, a constant shift between unity and separation. I only hope for a world without borders so anyone can love anyone, a world where some bodies aren’t treated as a threat. In the end, it becomes a question of how long you can stay away from something that makes us feel human, pure home-like bond. The only thing that keeps me going is memories from the past and being hopeful about togetherness in days to come, an in-between state of longing and bonding”. About the artist - Devashish Gaur (b.1996) is a photographer based in Delhi, India. He is particularly interested in building narratives that involve human emotions, idea of distance, intimacy, working with found objects and photographs.
