The project on display is titled “Amazônica”. Last year’s surge in Amazonian fires drew intense media coverage to the lungs of the world. As a story, it fell neatly within two larger narratives: climate change & the rise of right wing authoritarianism. The Bolsonaro regime’s policies, rooted in climate change denial & white supremacy, abetted an explosion of illegal mining & agricultural expansion that contributed to catastrophic fires in the world’s largest rainforest. While the public’s attention focused on this vital biome, its 20 million residents were lost in the background. This series brings those residents to the fore & seeks to connect them to the larger story being told about the rainforest and its future. It’s the culmination of a yearlong collaboration with Thiago Cavalli, founder of Casa Do Rio, a community based organization focused on youth leadership & development. Thiago sought me out because of the process I employ, informed by my experience as both an anthropologist & photographer, grounded in collaboration, with each subject ultimately defining the series’ message. Here, the photographs reflect a deep connection to the environment, expressed through the banality of everyday life & the rebellious creativity it inspires. About the artist - Daniel Jack Lyons’ background as a social anthropologist is very much at the heart of his practice as a photographer. His work, whether personal or commissioned, focuses largely on marginalized youth, whether occupying spaces on the periphery of society or in the face of conflict. And the collaborative methods he employs grants these subjects a greater sense of autonomy in guiding each project’s message, infusing Lyon’s work with a deeper creative spirit that often illuminates universal experiences that audiences may not have considered.
