This morning, after checking the timeline, I realized that yesterday was National Coming Out day, and I missed it. Distracted by my own joy, I forgot to honor one of the most difficult, life changing moments of my life - coming out. But I realized that the joy I experienced yesterday, the warm acceptance of myself and my child’s family was made possible by my own courage to come out, as well as the bravery of my queer brothers and sisters who came out before me, to a world that wasn’t as loving. All the pain, and struggle and loss that the queer community suffered, simply for wanting to exist in peace. All the barriers they ripped down helped to build a better world for me, my son and his moms. As a closeted high school boy, I was afraid that I would never be accepted. That spending a simple perfect fall day with my family was a dream reserved for straight people. The bravery, resilience and strength of the LBGTQIA+ community gave me my dream.
