Today is International #DayOfTheGirl 🙋🏻♀️🙋🏼♀️🙋🏽♀️🙋🏾♀️🙋🏿♀️♥️ and when I think about girlhood, I think about all of the messages I received. They were often confusing and contradictory. Looking back, I realize I was often told that I was SUPPOSED to be nice/sweet/cute, palatable, small, polite, and that I shouldn’t be “controversial” because that would be a “turn off,” for boys and eventually men, or colleges, or network executives or audiences, or whatever invisible human might not like me with an opinion attached. But I CHOSE TO be an advocate for justice, to speak up when I saw wrong-doing, to fight for the little guy, to demand better of others and of myself, to lead with empathy but take no shit, to be willing to learn in public and make my fallibility an open book, and to educate myself as deeply and frequently as possible so that I could best serve others. I shrugged off what I was #SUPPOSEDTO be and pursue what I #CHOSETO become. It hasn’t always been easy, but it has been honest. It hasn’t always been simple, but it has been deep. It hasn’t always been fun, but I have found oh so much joy throughout the journey. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
And today in particular, elevating the opportunities afforded to girls (and womxn) has never been more important. Morally, women deserve to thrive without experiencing oppression based on their gender, or harassment, or assault. Fiscally, we are leaving trillions of dollars a year on the world’s table by underpaying women. The global GDP would soar if we achieved parity. That means that both happiness and prosperity would increase if we valued women and girls the way we should. So let’s go! I am living proof that there is joy to be found in forging your own path. That there is justice to be grasped by advocating for your community. That there is vast potential to be tapped if we lean in to our girls. So let’s.
