Sharmaine got involved with Moms Demand Action and gun violence prevention after her son, Jared, was taken by senseless gun violence. Jared, an innocent bystander, died instantly after being struck by a stray bullet at a cookout. Through Moms Demand Action, Sharmaine has fought for public safety measures that can protect people from gun violence. She also founded her own non-profit, Jared’s Heart of Success, to provide opportunities for youth to learn leadership development, health and wellness, financial literacy, STEM and more.
