@jonathan.anderson asked if I might come up with an approach to Thomas Tallis’ 1570 motet for 40 voices for the new Loewe collection. I can honestly say this has been one of the most challenging but rewarding things I’ve ever worked on.

We started by generating a virtual choir from recordings of friends’ voices. Hanna Benn is an American composer and vocalist whose work spans dance, opera, and theatre. She provided us with tones in a Soprano range. Next came Robyn, a Swedish songwriter, producer, DJ and performer. She sang tones in a Contralto range. Shivum Sharma gave us an expanse of extra coverage, singing from bass up to soprano (!), and I rounded it out with the bass octave down to D2.

We imported the score of SIA and made software instruments with everyone’s voices. This became one iteration of the score, which you hear layered into “House in Alium” the middle section of the piece. You will also hear an improvisation from Robyn during this element.

French-Malagasy pianist, composer, producer, and bandleader, Mathis Picard constructed some piano & synth around a recording of Spem In Alium by the Tallis Scholars, which fades in and out of the arrangement. We invited our friend Vuyo Sotashe, the acclaimed South African jazz vocalist, to improvise to these elements. Finally, Hanna Benn was handed all of these recordings & arrangements, and added another layer of improvisation and composition. Her solo starts the piece and is otherworldly.

The final work is an assembly of recordings from different cities, different days and different centuries. I cannot express how grateful I am to my musical family for supporting me through the adventure, and one which the five of us are immensely proud of. Please take five minutes of your day to watch.
