Brown bears that live in coastal areas in Alaska and Canada often take advantage of the sea as a potential source of food. Brown bears are at the top of the food chain and are classified in the family order of the carnivores. In reality, though, they’re omnivorous. Eighty percent of the brown bear’s diet comes from sedges, berries, flowers, grasses, roots, and mushrooms, among other vegetable and fruit food sources. They get much of their protein from digging for insects and insect larvae, and they supplement their diet with rodents—mice, marmots, squirrels, etc. Occasionally, if the opportunity presents itself, they’ll hunt for young or old, sick, or injured large mammals, such as moose, but that’s relatively infrequent.
