When the coronavirus pandemic hit, and Baltimore closed its schools, 12-year-old Shemar, whose home situation is unstable, struggled to keep up with remote learning. “I grew increasingly distressed by the lack of public alarm over students like Shemar, who were sitting in countless dark rooms, safe from COVID-19, perhaps, but adrift and alone,” writes Alec MacGillis, who has tutored Shemar since 2018.
