The 1960 presidential election was the US's closest race since 1916, culminating in the election of John F Kennedy. His rival, Richard Nixon, had had the upper hand for most of the campaign, but for decades afterwards critics and pundits would suggest that he did not lose the election in November, but 6 weeks before, on September 26, 1960, when the first ever televised presidential debates aired to 70 million Americans.⁠

Marking the Kennedy-Nixon debate, which took place on this day 60 years ago, and ahead of this Tuesday's debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, we reflect on the influence of the televised format, and speak to Magnum photographers about how they captured public reactions to it over six decades.⁠
