At Mazzy’s school, they have student run affinity clubs for 6th-8th graders. I’m not sure how it’s usually done, but right now it’s run virtually and the clubs meet during Zoom lunch. There were three clubs organized by the school— a diversity club, an LGBTQ club and a feminist club. Students could select one of those clubs or start their own. Mazzy and her friend decided to start the Pet Club. They submitted a mission statement that got approved by the faculty. Then they built a slide presentation to welcome their members and tell them what their club is all about. Today was the first meeting and Mazzy was so excited that a whole bunch of kids showed up. They showed off their pets, exchanged fun facts and training tips and then talked about how their club would discuss issues like animal abuse, wildfires, animal testing, protecting wildlife, how global warming effects animals, etc. “Oh!” I said excitedly after she showed me her slides. “You started an animal rights club!” “No, Mom. *eyeroll* It’s a pet club.”
