Earlier this month we released zoo-bred Greater Bilbies back into the wild at Sturt National Park as part of the Wild Deserts project. A truly historic moment for both Taronga Western Plains and Taronga Conservation society as a whole. Greater Bilbies have been extinct in this part of NSW for more than a century and now 10 Greater Bilbies are roaming the large 4km x 5km feral-animal free area in the far north-west corner of the state!

We commenced breeding Greater Bilbies in our 110ha Sanctuary in Dubbo back in late 2019, so to be releasing some of these bilbies back into the wild so soon is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our teams! And of course, the optimum conditions provided by the rainfall in 2020.

This moment was a career highlight for our team who were on the ground with the traditional owners to see the bilbies released, a moment that will truly stay with them forever.

Moments like these are what drives our passion for wildlife and conservation, seeing animals return to the wild where they will hopefully not only survive but thrive once again!

This great achievement is part of the Saving Our Species initiative and was made possible thanks to a collaboration between with our team and @unsw, @unswscience, @nswenviromedia and @nswnationalparks

We thought it was important to share this iconic moment with our dedicated audiences and give you an insight as to how you prepare a bilby to released back into the wild. Over the course the next six days we will be sharing an episode daily which focuses on the different aspect of this release to Sturt National Park.
