マット・マクゴリーさんのインスタグラム写真 - (マット・マクゴリーInstagram)「Becoming Ms. Burton: From Prison to Recovery to Leading the Fight for Incarcerated Women" by Susan Burton & Cari Lynn (Burton's incredible org is @anewwayoflifela ) # Y'all...Susan Burton and her book are so momentous. Burton's story is tremendously powerful and inspiring. I was so awed by her resilience in hearing her story, and also so profoundly disgusted by the brutally oppressive prison-industrial complex and how the larger systems of society intentionally set so many people up to fail. No one should have to endure what she went through, and yet entirely too many people in the United States do. Her transformation and what she has achieved in her life as an organizer is a model to so many of us for how we can fight these systems of oppression. And I also love that the book is very accessible, so if you're someone who needs more of a narrative than many of the other, more academic-leaning books that I post, this would be a great book to read. And also would make a great gift to other people in your life who you want to better understand this country's system of incarceration...especially for white folx. # “Fire camp is a privilege,” a board member informed me. Indeed, this privilege was reserved for those who presented little threat of escape if taken off prison grounds. But being sent to the front line to fight California wildfires when you wanted to be learning how to do hair seemed the opposite of a privilege. As for my future as a beautician, fire camp burned that dream to ash. What I didn’t know at the time was that, even if an assignment to the cosmetology shop had been granted, I still wouldn’t have stood a chance of working in a beauty shop on the outside. Most professional licenses - whether it was beautician, barber, social worker, plumber, the list in many states was a hundred job titles long - were denied to people with a criminal record." #SusanBurton #CariLynn #BecomingMsBurton # My Booklist: bit.ly/mcgreads (link in bio) #McGReads」9月22日 4時20分 - mattmcgorry
