I’ve spoke a lot about how uncomfortable I’ve felt when no one else speaks up, and really addresses the situation. No one likes it when a black person tells them what they said was racist. However, the message comes across different when it comes from a white person. Any time I’ve voiced my frustration and outrage at an incident of racism, 99% of the time I’m met with denial and it gets turned around on me. This is what I mean when I say, your voice is louder than mine. I’ve had a few people ask me what should they do when they witness an incident of racism. STAND UP! ALWAYS! If your against racism, then stop tolerating it. Call out your racist friends, families and co workers. If you feel so uncomfortable speaking out, think of how we feel having to experience it. For some reason it’s not okay for black people to be hurt and offended when someone’s racist. We get told that we are the problem, we need to calm down and that we are sensitive. The emotional invalidation we receive when we speak out just adds to the list of emotional abuse black people face everyday. If you want to be a good ally then you need to speak up, speak loud and don’t stop. Don’t stop until the message is loud and clear. For too long We have waited for YOU to listen, and for YOU to speak up. If you witness an incident of racism, and you ask yourself if you should speak up?
