Found in the Edwards Plateau of #Texas, they are named for the unusual, curved spines that curl like a fishhook and spend the first five years of their life the size of a quarter, not producing any flowers. Because its location has frequent droughts and wildfires, the cactus grows very slowly. While listed as endangered in 1979, conservation work around the cactus has allowed them to be successfully downlisted to threatened under the Trump Administration.
