When Alaïa moved his atelier to an enormous complex in the heart of the Marais, Paris, in 1990, the designer discovered that the building was once home to Jeanne Antoinette Poisson, an 18th-century marquise more commonly known as Madame de Pompadour. Upon this discovery, Alaïa formed his historic S/S92 collection with the legendary French figure in mind, translating styles of the 18th century for the contemporary woman of the 1990s.
