It’s an incredibly intimate and moving photographic essay about Odella, a 60-year-old woman who lived more than half her life in institutions, overcoming tremendous tragedy. The photographer Carlota Duarte first met her in 1974, when Odella was 45 years old, and invited Duarte to begin taking her photographs – often having props, wigs and outfits ready for her photo sessions at home. This book spans their time together over several decades, alongside intimate commentary by Odella from tape recordings and interviews.
