On Sept. 8, photographer Ethan Swope was driving down Lumpkin Rd. in Oroville, Calif., when he reached @calfire Feather Falls Station #51. Engines were arriving to protect the station and nearby homes from a rapidly approaching fire, including the Sugar Pine Conservation Camp inmate crew. "At a certain point, I realized it would no longer be safe to stay and I backed off from the front. The next morning, I returned and found the crew resting. They were welcoming, despite having been up for 24 hours, and said at one point they were surrounded by fire. 'We almost died,' one admitted." Inside the dark interior of the engine, Swope photographed an inmate firefighter catching up on sleep. Several of the men spoke of being interested in eventually pursuing a career in firefighting. Days later, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed AB 2147, creating an easier path for inmate firefighters to become professional ones after they are released. Photograph by @ethanswopephoto
